The Association Crianças do Vale de Luz (ACVLuz) was founded by two teachers, Mariane Canella and Tião Guerra, in the city of Nova Friburgo, which lies up in the mountains of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In 1991, Mariane and Tião created the school “Vale de Luz”, in a rural area located near one of the biggest favelas of the city.

Teacher and StudentsTheir main focus has always been on teaching children in a mainstream environment, whilst including children with special educational needs and less privileged children from the surrounding social risk areas and favelas. Students study conventional school subjects as well as arts and handcrafts. They are encouraged to care about the environment and are responsible for producing some vegetables and cereals.

The teaching method is currently based on the German “Waldorf” Education. Since the year 2000, the School “Cecilia Meireles” has joined the School Vale de Luz in this community-based project, aiming at high quality education inside of the public school network. Together, both schools cater to the needs of 300 children from 2 to 12 years of age. Partly funded by local government and donations, as well as raising funds that go towards resources and staff salaries, the schools are trying to meet the challenge of making the project possible to more children.
