Located within close proximity of the Atlantic Ocean in the West African capital city of Ghana, Accra, is the New Horizon Special School.  It was established in 1972 by Mrs Salome Francois, the mother of a daughter who has learning difficulties and has founded itself as a day school geared to serve children and adults who have special educational needs.  It is registered as a voluntary non-profit making organisation, therefore relying on donations for resources.

ClassroomThe school has undertaken the responsibility of providing basic individualised education for children aged 4 -16 years and offers “Sheltered Vocational Workshops” which give training and employment in occupational and life skills to those who are older.  At present 140 children, teenagers and adults attend the school and parents are encouraged to be very much involved in their child’s education process. The school regularly organises seminars / radio-programmes designed to educate the public on special educational needs and promoting the Fundamental Human Rights of Children with learning difficulties.

AS ITS PHILOSOPHY, THE SCHOOL BELIEVES THAT EVERY CHILD WHETHER COPING WITH A LEARNING DIFFCULTY OR NOT, HAS THE RIGHT TO DEVELOP TO HIS OR HER FULLEST CAPABILITIES
